Most doctors says not to worry until day 3 without a BM. Call your doctor and ask... They don't mine if you call for anything... That's way their there...Good luck♥

Question: How many bowel movements should a newborn have in one day and what color should they be?

Answer: A newborn can have as many as eight to ten bowel movements a day, but as long as she is having at least one, she's probably all right. One day without a bowel movement is usually no cause for concern. As long as your baby is feeding well and wetting her diaper five or six times a day, then she's most likely getting enough to eat. If she starts to become uncomfortable or has a persistently swollen abdomen, then she may need some help with pooping, and you should speak to your pediatrician about how to facilitate this.

In the early days, a newborn's bowel movements are thick and dark green in color. This is due to a substance called meconium that has been building up in her intestines during pregnancy. As the baby starts to feed and have bowel movements, she will finish expelling the meconium and her stools will start to turn yellowish. It is not uncommon for an infant's bowel movements to vary in color from day to day. The color of the stools can depend on a variety of things, including what a breastfeeding mom is eating, how hydrated the baby is, and the type and frequency of formula the infant is being fed, if applicable.

There's no need to worry - if your child is wetting the usual number of diapers and is eating every 2 to 3 hrs (although my girl seemed to nurse even more than that during the day at that age) than she should be fine. Dont try any home remedies just yet. I'll tell you what my pediatrician told me as I was concerned about my girl not having bowel movements (she went a full week without having one!): ''It completely depends on the baby how often they will have a dirty diaper. It's not constipation until it is hard and difficult to pass. If you want to help any movement pass, try using a rectal thermometer and then sit her upright.''
I know at this age you will be worried about EVERYTHING, but try not to worry too much. Every baby is different, and it will just take a little of time before you know your baby well enough to know what is normal for her and what isnt.

Wow, you have a lot of different answers on here, the best thing I can tell you is in accordance with an answer above; my doctor told me that it is normal for a baby not to have a bowel movement in a 48 hour period. Especially at three weeks, her little body and digestive system is growing at a rapid pace, she is also eating more and more, right? If she's breast fed or bottle fed it's all the same, I believe, as long as she is eating well and is having consistent wet diapers... but after 48 hours I would call your pediatrician and get advice from there. Good luck!

It isn't necessarily reason to worry yet. She could be a little off-schedule for some reason - did she have a bottle or bottles at a slightly different time?

I, personally, wouldn't use prune juice or do anything other than - if it goes on a little longer - calling the doctor.

Three wet diapers aren't many for a baby that young, though, so keep paying attention to how many wet diapers there are in case you end up calling the pediatrician.

if your baby is breastfed, then chances are good there's absolutely nothing wrong. Breastfed babies can go up to a week (and I've heard of longer) without a bowel movement, because the milk is so completely digested. My son often skips a day, and has more the next day. Every baby is different! So long as she is not seeming to be uncomfortable and is still peeing, I'm sure she's ok.

However, if you are formula feeding, I don't know enough about formula-fed babies to advise.

At one week my baby had a bowel movement every two days, and she still has that pattern. I was told by a nurse that anything over four days with no bowel movement is considered constipation in a formula fed babies, and anything over ten days is considered consitpation in a breast fed baby. Also if the poop is pellet like its constipation. Loose stools are not consitpation. I was worried at first because I heard she should go three times a day, which is just not true.Every two days is normal for my babe, so it may be normal for yours too.

It's very normal for babies to go a day, sometimes 2 or 3 days without a bowel movement. As long as they are eating, drinking and urinating, she should be ok. But definitely call her pediatrician, just to be safe.

My nephew was born 2 &1/2 months ago and has been having problems with being constipated. The doctors said not to worry until day 3-4 of no bm's. Talk to your pediatrician though since all kids are different. Sounds horrible doesn't it? But ya just never know

Unless she has gone about 48 hours with no bowel movement you don't need to do anything. NEVER give a baby that young prune juice without talking to their doctor.

Yes Be worried, That is not Normal, Let me guess she is on Formula? right? Ok well your baby is constipated, and could even possibly have a blocked intestine. Breat milk cleans a babies system out, Formula does the opposite, Nothing!, In fact it has been proven that the digestive tract in a newborn can be damaged by over constipation caused by formula, You need to seek medical attention as soon as humanly possible! Your baby is in serious need of that!, Good luck
