NEW YORK (Oct. 1) - Joe Mauer became the first catcher to win the American League batting title, going 2-for-4 for the Minnesota Twins on the final day of the regular season to hold off the New York Yankees ' Derek Jeter .

Has baseball become too much of a numbers game?

Are there factors regarding fielding, team coordinator/motivator, etc. that just isn't in the stats that make a great ball player and an MVP?

Your Choice....Derek Jeter or Joe Mauer.

Derek Jeter. While the Yankees were decimated with injuries Jeter was the driving force and kept the team in the hunt. Playing in the spot light of New York is a lot different than playing in a pup tent in the mid-west. Stats are probably more important to the game of baseball than any other sport. I think it's pretty clear to everyone that Jeter is the MVP this season.

Mauer won the batting title. That is a numbers game. As for the MVP, the voting closed yesterday at 5 PM. The playoffs will not affect the voting, although getting to the playoffs probably did. David Ortiz's numbers warrant his serious consideration, but he is a DH, so there are a number of baseball writers who have stated that they will not vote for him. Don't be so sure Jeter won't get it. I would have voted for Big Papi but I am not a baseball writer and I am biased.

Joe Mauer - he had the highest batting average.

Batting average being the only criteria for the batting title.

Batting title being not the same as MVP.

Mauer should be MVP too, there are enough good players on the yankees, you have to factor in reletive team strengths, if you factor in whether the team makes the playoffs or not, which most people do.

Derek Jeter. The King of Kings.

Let's think about it. At 31 he's actually getting better.

DEREK JETER IS A FREAKING GREAT PLAYER AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT...even though I, uh, dislike the Yankees because they always win, I have to admit, as everyone else should, that he's really GOOD.

Robbed of what? Jeter did not have the highest batting average therefore could not win the batting title.
