1.2 x 10^6..i thought that when you multiply there was no need to change the exponents!

The only thing you didn't do was normalize the scientific notation.
The decimal needs to be greater than or equal to one and less than 10. If it is greater than 10, you can move the decimal point one place to the left, and add one to the exponent.

you are correct.However in scientific notation you cannot have two numbers. They must be single digits or a single digit with a decimal. Nonetheless 12 x 10^5 = 1.2x10^6
