In a recent study (see source), the U.S. ranked 33rd out of 34 in understanding of genetics and acceptance of evolution. Only Turkey was behind us.
Since 1985, the percentage of Americans who accept evolution has dropped from 45 to 40%. But the percentage who *reject* evolution has also dropped (slightly more) from 48 to 39%. What has gone up is the percentage who are now "unsure" ... up from 7% to 21%. That means that 1 in 5 Americans don't know what to think anymore, or that scientists consider evolution more valid and solid than ever (acceptance of evolution remains about 95% among American scientists, or 99.8% among scientists from other countries).
Conclusion ... the active campaigning by fundamentalists to promote "alternative scientific theories" to evolution has not converted people to their position (in fact, they have lost converts) ... all it has done is left everyday Americans *confused*.
So yes, America is failing science.

The US governement is failing science by not funding it and stifling it.
Our students struggle with science and math (although I don't know that I'd say we're "failing" overall) because our schools are horrible, our teachers are poor and are not encouraged to strive towards anything greater... just like the kids they teach. It's depressing.
