in French, "le" is a definite article for a masculine noun, or a noun without gender (called "neuter"). "La" is the definite article for a feminine noun. A definite article in English is "the".

An indefinite article in English is "a" or "an". In French, the masculine indefinite article is "un" and the feminine indefinite article is "une".

English doesn't really have masculine or feminine designations for our nouns. Hope this helps!
