I did that myself twice. Once to NewZealand and Australia and also again (the next summer) to Europe.
The first time I went (way back in the days of 1999) it was a non-profit organization a year later when I was invited again it had since become a profitable organization. Since then i have lost much faith in the orgaization which used to sincerely be a non profit organization designed to enchance childrens cultural knowledge as well as send a good message to other countries about america. The first time I had a blast. The second time i passed out from lack of nutrients. (like i said became profitable which meant they didn't provide very healthly meals)

My granddaughter went to Amsterdam with the People to People organization. She plays soccer. They have to be nominated by a teacher. They spent 10 days there, playing soccer and seeing the sights and getting to know other kids their age from all over. The drawback is that it cost $5,000. Her dad paid for it but if the child doesn't have the money, then they will have to do money raising events in order to pay the fee.
