I have a habit of calling girls, old and young Sweety. I mean it the same way I call a guy buddy, or man (hey man, etc.)

What is your first reaction to this, and educated reaction knowing that statement above.

I may call females Sweety at times, but only my woman (gf, fiancee, wife, as the case may be) will be called Baby.

She knows. My best friend is a girl, and I say that to her too, especially during a sensitive times when I need to be.

There are times, if I first meet someone, where I'll say "What is your name, Sweety?" I feel that softens the question, but I guess it sounds condescending too. Can't win.

I'm not southern, myself, but my father's family is...maybe I got this from them.

As far as my fiancee knowing I called my exes Baby too...isn't that expected?

I call kids Sweetie, Honey & Darlin'. I don't think I could do that with an adult. I will call someone Dear if it's someone that I see on a regular basis & am aquainted with. Like a cashier in a restaurant, "thank you, Dear".
Coming from a man, hmm, I think if I knew him it wouldn't bother me. But a total stranger I would think he was being flirty & I wouldn't care for it.

Personally ,sweety is not at all offensive it tells me your just an affectionate person, but on a professional level it could be considered harrassing or rude ,try calling a man sweety and if he dont like it "which he probally wont,''then take in to consideration most women demand to be treated with the same respect ! Later muffin!

Your gf, fiancee, or wife will not like you calling other females pet names whether it is honey, honeybun, sweety, sweetypie, sweetheart, sugar, sugarplum and definitely do not call them "baby". Also, it sounds like you are flirting and it makes your gf look really bad and feel like a fool in front of other women spectators and in front of those women that you address like that because no woman wants her man to do stuff like that at all, but especially not in her presence. I don't like my man to do that crap either. It makes me feel disrespected. If he calls other women those terms of endearment, then when we go out--I make sure to use a few of my own such as sweety, baby, love, and my favorite "Papi" towards other men. He doesn't like it. If he would continue to have no respect for me and my feelings, then I don't need him.I would leave him before I would allow that to go on, I don't care if he thinks it's harmless and doesn't mean anything. If it really was harmless and meaningless, then it makes sense that he should just Stop the harmless/meaningless behavior rather than hurt or upset me.

Definite no no. I hate the sound of being called sweety, and i always cringe when I get called it. Some people i don't mind it from, but if I don't know you or we are just aquantancies or friends, i'd think you would want something or being really fake.

I used to hate this.

I've learned that it is just how some people are. If you're sincere about calling anyone by anything other than their name, it's ok.

My last boss called me sunshine, and I didn't mind a bit.

My hubby thinks anything other than someone's name is terrible. (No shortening of names either -- Robert called Robbie is not acceptable.) Plus, how will your wife feel one day when she knows all the girls before her were called Baby....

Just have to do what works for you!

Depends on the person...strangers calling me sweety sometimes puts my back up because I don't know if he just like that or being patronizing. For many men it is a put down

I get really offended when people call me anything other than my name because I feel like they feel like I am beneath them. You wouldn't call your boss that, so why me? See what I mean? You might want to be alittle careful with that because with this Women's Lib thing still around and the gender roles slowly changing, you will probably be hated more than loved for that term of endearment.
