The generalization is having an Aries Sun Sign, which typically those super market books would tell you that you're compatible with a Leo, or Sagittarius. "Mickey mouse" scopes are not detailed or accurate enough.
However there is more to astrology than just a basic sun sign. To know if your compatible with another or what to look for in a mate depends upon your entire horoscope. If you are a woman you look to your sun and mars sign traits and find a man who is like that. If you are a man look at your moon and Venus sign and this will indicate the kind of mate that you look for.
Let's say that you're an Aries with a bunch of Pisces planets and you seem to get along better with people who have cancer, Scorpio or Pisces sun signs than Aries, Leo or sag sign suns. This would throw off the basic sun sign compatibility chart you bought in the super market. So find a website that does free charts and study up on some basic astrology.
I wouldn't put much stock or live my life through the stars - it's best to go with your instincts when you meet people and go that way. You will know yourself if you have great chemistry with another person - regardless of their sun sign.

However, Aries are supposedly best suited to other fire signs such as Aries, Sagitarius and Leo as well as the air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

Part depends on Aries male or female. I'm aries male and was divorced for about 17 years until recently. I can truthfully say that I have dated libras, scorpios, virgos, aquarius, leos, aries, taurus successfully, and they were all wonderful and great lovers.
Can;t say which might be best for you, but I suggest you don't automatically eliminate any of them.
