If the torque converter is not "locking up" or the converter clutch is not working properly, then the engine never mates 1 on 1 with the converter. This will cause a slight drop in fuel mileage. After the transmission shifts to overdrive the torque converter is supposed to lock in place with a one to one ratio with the speed of the crankshaft. If the torque converter clutch is not operating correctly, this will not happen and the engine will be running at a slightly higher RPM, causing more fuel consumption.

I've never heard an automatic clutch grind. if the clutch is bad in an automatic it won't run for a year. I can't tell what your problem is by not being there but you probably haven't tuned it or checked the air in your tires or replaced the air filter or any of the other things that cause bad gas mileage have you? I am on a fixed income so I know what it's like to not be able to do what is necessary. You need to have an experienced mechanic look at it because some grinding noises can be VERY VERY dangerous. A wheel bearing locked down, bearings in tranny or rear end lock down,motor locking up etc can cause horrible wrecks. Please have it checked and don't listen to stupid guesses.

Yes, of course it can affect the mpg's! The mechanical condition of a car in it's parts and as a whole will always play a significant factor in the "pull" on the car, and of course affect the mpg's you get!
Anything from body kits, (aerodynamic features) to driving with windows open, to underinflated tires, worn spark plugs, faulty thermostats, filters, dragging brakes, emission control systems and of course transmission issues will affect the gas that's burned and it's rate.
While I know the repair can be costly, consider either a rebuilt- or, working with a shop that will accept a payment plan of some kind for repair. Or, even consider paying someone on the side for reliable labor and inexpensive parts (off duty mechanics have the knowlege/ability and connections- don't be afraid to ask around).
Keep in mind that a car, just like a body and all it's mechanisms are interelated. You let this slip by, and it can and will take it's toll on other parts as well. So, either you'll have to lay out the money for additional gas costs and repairs or, you can layout the money now (credit works too)...OR, you can run the beast into the ground and have to pay double or triple to start with another vehicle that will have it's own set of issues!
My advice would be to surf and search around for replacement/repair!

If your transmission is slipping you engine will be turning faster then it should. If your engine is turning the transmission and you are going 40 mph, you engine could be turning as if it is going 60 mph, so, your fuel mileage would suffer. As the previous reply said, you should look into a used transmission from a wrecking yard. Be sure to get at least a 30 day warranty.
Your transmission has friction plates inside called "clutches" and bands and pumps and gears.

an automatic trans has a torque converter no clutch. the grinding could be from the trans. if the tq converter is going out, than from a stop you would give it gas and it would rev up and jerk forward and than rev up and jerk again. the grinding is anything that rotates and rubs. if you can hear it than it is a problem. the poor gas mileage is the least of your worries. you should get rid of the car before you can't sell it anymore. the mileage is a few problems including it is all wheel drive. get rid of it fast... like next week.

that is a possibility. A used trans should be cheaper, though, and NOT from a dealer.
