you probably need a win 98 driver for it. The different Operating systems have different drivers for it (especially Win XP). Check the CD-ROM manufacturer website to find the different drivers for it. If you can't find it that way, you may have to google it.

CD-ROM is a plug and play device that doesn't need any drivers co'z Windows already provides one for it. It is either your CD-ROM is not functioning or you connected the CD-ROM incorrectly during cold boot (procedure of the computer during restart or after you turn on the computer) the BIOS detects any hardware available and displays it on your screen which means the BIOS reognizes it. If you're CD-ROM is not one on the detected hardware list then check the IDE cable connections.

make sure that is not a cd-writer,if it is u have to install the driver to write.but to access cd-rom or cd-writer as cd-rom in 98,u need not do any installation.plud in the data cable of cd-rom properly, then restart ur computer.press del to go to bios, the check ur peripheral devices,if cd rom is there, its ok,otherwise do the same as earlier.it will certainly come..if u can see the cd-rom drive in my-comuter window,& then also its not working, then u have to replace it with a new one.
