Of course she can. However, her baby will have difficulty latching onto her nipple with the ring in the way, especially when he/she is very young and not used to nursing. It might even prevent the baby from learning to breastfeed at all.

When a baby breastfeeds, he sucks in not just the nipple but a large portion of the areola as well. The ring pierces through milk ducts, and will cause extra jets of milk through the piercing holes.

If possible, your friend might seriously consider having her nipple rings unsoldered and remove them for a few months, or at least until the baby is old enough to wean onto a bottle. At least, with a soldered ring, she won't have to worry about the ring coming off and being swallowed by her baby.

Breastfeeding her baby is one of the best and most important gifts she can give her child. Her baby will be healthier and have fewer immune system problems, fewer if any ear infections, and have a better relationship with his/her mother.
If your girlfriend's significant other (if any) objects to the nipple rings' removal, he might consider a temporary removal to ensure a healthy start for the baby.

Oh honey. Mine are both pierced and I have a 7 1/2 month old son. Believe me, it is possible. And as someone mentioned before, being soldered there is no way they might come undone and choke her child. I say support her decision and let her know there is no harm in trying. Maybe even let her know that there are WIC (Women Infants and Children) offices that specialize in helping women.

I don't think so. A friend of mine was still lactating and hadn't had her period, even though she had quit nursing long before (at least 6 mos). She got her nipples pierced and quit lactating and got her period within the month.

But, if your friend wants to breastfeed, she should talk to her dr -- I wonder if she got the piercings removed????

You can breastfeed with pierced nipples, but it is suggested that you remove the piercings while you are nursing.

I'm a piercer... You absolutely CAN NOT breastfeed with pierced nipples. It's EXTREMELY hazardous to the baby. Period!

As far as I know nipples are peirced in a way that doens't abstruct breastfeeding. Even women who have gotten breast reduction surgery can successfully breastfeed.

you could breastfeed with piercings. you'll make milk as conventional. you'll probable favor to remove the jewellery even as nursing, lest toddler scratch his mouth or maybe swallow/choke on some thing that comes off.
