At work today they pulled me aside and told me I need to go faster. The want a 500 and I'm at 475. I can't really go any faster, I've tried. The question is, should I quit or wait for them to fire me?

With 30 years experience, that would be a shame for them to fire you.

What is the 475 and 500? It seems like you are close to what they want.

I would wait it out. Maybe they will see their foolishness.

Ask them to do 500 day in and day out without mistakes. If they can do it, then you will give it your best shot at 500. If they challenge you and fail then tell them you will gracefully quit. But if they can't meet the quota consistently with quality integrity, then they need to Buzz off and leave the 30 years of people and cashiering experience where the "employee is the asset and not the problem" alone. Sounds like age discrimination. You have staying power and mastery of skills these young people won't see for years to come.

What a shame that after 30 years of dedication, they would pull you aside to reprimand you. You would think that they would be thrilled with your knowledge as well as your presence in the store.
Unfortunately, in today's fast-paced world, people only see the dollar signs and don't realize what they have in you, and the fact that I would guess many customers return to see you.

I was in a similar situation, only I was a waitress. I had nearly 30 years experience, but just couldn't keep up to the young ones anymore, nor did I even want to. I had a system and it worked for me. So what I did was start a home business in the health and wellness industry. Because I'm a boomer, I know many people with a variety of health issues, and I was able to help them with their issues. What eventually happened was I replaced my income and no longer needed to work outside of my home. I now have many customers, lots of tax breaks and full training. I work in my pajamas and make better money than I ever did in the outside world. I recommend this to all the baby boomers out there.

What a rook.. the older cashiers are usually nicer. Stick with it and do your best and if they complain about it again, tell them you do as well as you can. It would suck for them to fire you after 30 years. :(

I can offer you a tip to improving speed that you can try (at the very least it's worth a shot right?)... I've had your position (not 30 years though!) and was pretty fast... I found the best way to scan items and increase your speed is to do this:

So basically if you're right handed it's three steps. (Say it's soup.) 1. Pick up soup in right hand (scan) 2. Put soup in left hand 3. Put soup in bag with left hand while starting process over with right.

They tell people to speed it up using two hands, but if you reach for items with both hands it just becomes clumsy and slows you down. :/

Anyway, good luck. If this doesn't work then find out how critical your speed is to keeping your job and/or begin looking for work elsewhere.

It's not likely that they are going to fire you even if you are a little slower if you have been with them for 30 years. Be sure that you are not doing something that is causing the management to look for a reason to let you go. Are you a big complainer, an agitator, a whiner? If you are causing management problems then MAYBE they are looking to get rid of you...if you can't change your ways then go look for another job. On the other hand if you come across to management as a loyal and dedicated employee I doubt that they will let you go even if they are trying to push you to be more productive...They may be considering moving to to another position in the company and are looking for a way to justify that .. just do your best and be loyal and you should be fine..

That is ridiculous and it sounds of age discrimination for which older workers are protected under The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA). It protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age. The ADEA's protections apply to both employees and job applicants. Under the ADEA, it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment -- including, but not limited to, hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments, and training.

A 475 versus a 500 is not a huge discrepancy and unless the 500 is an actual REQUIREMENT for the work, then this store could face potential legal consequences for firing you. DO NOT QUIT. If you are fired, hire a labor law/employment attorney who specializes in age discrimination.

Just stop talking to the customers and scan. If that doesn't work you should look for another job, you don't have to put up with this crap. They should be happy you have stayed with them for 30 years, i bet those 20 year olds wont even last a few months. Try and get another job before they fire you.

find a new job, but if they fire you than you will get to collect an unemployment check. if they don't enjoy your experience than they don't need your help. they want to make money and they can do that by only hiring young people. let them keep there extra $300 a year they will save. you should find a new job being a cashier. there are many of those jobs around. good luck!

A little vacation with pay (unemployment) would probably be pleasant and also give you time to find something easier & better as well as a good lawyer. I don't think it will come to that. They keep trying to put pressure on employees but I'll bet they notice that you are there everyday when the younger ones aren't and I'll bet you donuts to dollars that you do a better job.

wait for them to fire you, but be thinking about other jobs. If they fire you, they have to pay you unemployment or give you a severance package. If you quit you are out of luck. I should think they should be too concerned about a lawsuit to fire you for it. Good Luck, they sound like real @holes
