I'm looking to make purses but have found that many of the stores that I've been to like Walmart and Joann fabric don't seem to have what I'm looking for. I want designs that are vibrant and modern, yet don't cost a lot.

try finding a fabric wholesaler in your area. A lot of times these places are stores/warehouses you would never dream of looking in, however i've found so much fabrics of different varieties, designs, colors, everything you could imagine for about 1/2 the price i would have been paying at retail or fabric stores. the only downside is that the warehouses are huge, and there's so much fabrics, it may take a while searching through the piles of what you need. but in the end the quality is pretty good, and the costs are low.

try a store that specializes in reupholstry, some times they will have scraps that they sell and they are heavier fabric than the ordinary stuff, but for vibrant, joanns does have some quite bright fabrics here, i dont know that i would want a vibrant purse. guess im too old fashioned, black and brown, not too much junk on it. silly me.

Go to a quilting store. They have bolt after bolt of exciting fabrics used in small quantities to liven up quilt designs.

I got some fab fabrics at the one in Newark, California.

Have you tried Goodwill (or other thrift stores)? Recycle old clothing. What about linens such as sheets & pillowcases, bed spreads, kitchen towels, table cloths? What about buying canvas (cheap!) at Home Depot and decorating/painting it yourself?
