My 1989 Toyota Camry makes this gear slip/rumble (the whole car slightly shakes) when it switches from 1st gear to 2nd - especially when the engine is still cold. What could be wrong with it?

When was the last time you had your transmission serviced? Transmissions oil should be changed out on a yearly basis. If you have been doing tranmission oil maintenance on a yearly basis then it's most likely that you are just low on transmission fluid. If you haven't been doing proper maintenance on your transmission and the car is now 17 years old, it's highly likely that the transmission is shot.

However, best thing to do is to check out the transmission fluid level and be sure it's at the proper level.

Its probably got high miles, could need a motor mount, and a tune-up.
