Supposedly, my great grandmother had some shares of Niagara Power and Light. She was from Buffalo, NY and got some at the formation of the company. There are no stock certificates that I know of and we know about them only from a letter we found written by my great grandma leaving them to my grandma. Both of them are now deceased. My grandma did not know about them. Is there some kind of search that I can do to locate these shares? Would they be in some historical ledger from the company? Or, do I have nothing with out the certificates? They would have been from around the 1920s.

Ask the company...They usually keep track of who owns their stock. Now if it from the 1920's I not sure if they've kept such great records all the way back.

Just check with both your ggm and gm's names

Look at New York's State Comptroller's website. Then just enter your grandma's name. You may find she had other assets as well.

I don't know for sure but you can also try the Securities and Exchange Commision since they regulate stocks and bonds.

Good luck!

Boy, you're lucky it's not one of them there heavy companies. Ransack Granny's house. Them things are bound to show up. If by chance they don't, commence to digging holes in the old bags yard. That's probably where they are. She obviously didn't trust you bunch of buzzards, did she?
