lets say we have 9x(squared) and x=2 so it would then be
9(2)(squared). Do u square the 2 and then times it by the 9 or do u times 9 by 2 and then square it?

You square the 2 and then multiply by 9. If you were suppose to multiply the 9 and 2 first it would look like this (9*2)^2. Your problem is (9)*(2)^2. Which again is square the two first.

9 (2)^2 =

This is ambiguous, and parentheses are generally used to make the intent clear.
These are two possibilities. Typically though, when someone says "9x squared" it usually refers to (1) below, but it is ambiguous. You are right to ask for clarification
