I was about 5 when I saw a part of it and I couldn't take a shower with my eyes closed for days. The scariest part is the tension caused by the soundtrack. Now I don't think it's scary, but I would definately keep it away from kids until they're ready for that type of movies.

It's not really all that scary. It did make you jump a few times. I think the scariest part was when Matt Hooper dove down to Ben Garner's boat and Ben's head popped out at him. That was a 10. It really made you jump. It wasn't some much scary as kind of gory in parts.

What made the movie scary for me was living on the beach and swimming all the time, day and night, way out into the ocean.
Then I saw this movie and had no clue there were so many sharks near the shore. Never been the same since.

In the aftermath of the movie's release in 1975, a fear of man eating sharks created havoc on beaches and on water everywhere. People were scared of swimming in the ocean and sharks were indiscriminately slaughtered.I would say that the movie created an uncontrollable fear in the general population.
Personally it scared the poop out of me. In my book I give Jaws a "10". And the scariest part is when Quint gets to meet his Nemesis face to face. For 1975, it had to be one of the scariest movie of the 70's for me.
You have to remember that in the seventies special effects were not computerized. Frame by frame was still used( not necessarily in Jaws) and that was an art in itself. You had to be at least in your late teen and early twenties to understand the impact the movie caused. When I say it created uncontrolable fear, I am not lying or pulling your leg. You had to be there to experience it, and that is why Jaws is a "10" in my book.

If it's explained to you, it doesn't sound scary, but when you watch it, it's a little scarier, but the really scary part comes WAY AFTER you've seen it. the first time you're swimming in a lake or river. It will come back to you and scare the BEJEEBAS out of you. You'll freak out like a crazy person and won't be able to reason to yourself that there can't possibly be a shark in the small body of water that you're swimming in. Logic goes right out the window!!!!

The scene where he rips out the boat with the three main characters, Roy Scheider, Rober Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss its interesting and suspensful how Speilberg set the sequence that rips your gut out like you were on the water. I give it a 9 1/2.

When you don't see the actual fake shark it can be scaryish. Now-a-days it's not too scary unless you're under 10 yrs. old or so.
The shark really looks fake to today's audience. Very metallic and rubbery. It's the build up, the music and the shots of the swimemrs from different angles that builds up the fear and intensity.

hm... i say 8. its not really scary its just that theres a lot of suspense in it. i think its becuase of the "mystery" of the shark. like they dont show the shark. for example they show these barrels or something floating then it goes down. supposedly, its suppose to be the shark swimming downwards. if u want to see a scary movie, watch the ring or the grudge or the grudge 2. those movies give me the creeps!
