Compass is a computerized test that bases the level of question on the answer you just gave it. It starts will a pre-algebra question. If you answer correctly, it asks a more difficult question. If you answer incorrectly, it goes down a level.

Study pre-algebra. As long as you can keep it above the pre-algebra level, you'll have a decent score. But don't bother trying to "fool" the test -- you'll just end up hurting yourself. As you mentioned, the Compass is a placement test. If you are placed in a class more advanced than you really are, you'll end up confused and learning very little.
