My boyfriend's coworker and his wife just had their second child on Sunday - a girl. What could we get the new addition that is original and practical?

Make two gift baskets. One with baby essentials like diapers, towels, lotion, lavendar bath, stuff like that, and one for the mom. Scented candles, bubble bath, bath salts, yummy lotion, herbal teas, a gift cert. for a spa..........

If you know the details of the baby (name, weight, ect.) then maybe you can look into something personalized. I don't know where you live but where I live they have a store called "Things Engraved" but there are many stores like it which sell a huge assortment of personalized and/or engraved items. Many things which are baby related, inluding blankets with their name and date of birth on it for example. Or, maybe a bedtime basket with a little blankie, a sleeper, lullabye cd, nightlight, ect. By the way, a great lullabye cd is "A Child's Gift of Lullabyes". Or, I also like and know from experience that a great gift is the medicine cabinet gift with things like thermometer (preferrably digital), baby nail clippers, saline solution, nasal aspirator (gross but necessary), Tempra, diaper rash cream, baby orajel or other teething releif, ect. Or, a baby bathtub with bath items like a nice hooded towel, washcloth, baby wash, shampoo, rubber ducky, one of those things that checks the temperature of the water to tell you if it's a safe temp for baby (comes as different things like ducks, boats, ect. it's like a small hard plastic toy about the size of a little rubber ducky), a bath book, q-tips, baby powder, ect. Anyway, I've gone on and on enough. I'm sure she'll appreciate whatever you end up getting and it's nice to see you putting so much thought into the gift and really trying to give something useful and unique.

In the days of cloth diapers, I use to get a diaper pail and put in all the things needed for bath time and changing diapers. I even put in a few extras like baby spoons and such. Now with all the disposable diapers and bottles, I get a back pack type of diaper bag and put the the same things in there. Most of the new mom's love it. If not your cup of tea, how about a gift certificate, that way they can get what they need when they need it. Congrats to the new mom.

I know a lot of people have said this but. Diapers. They help out soooo much. I would even get them a big box of size 1 or 2 so they have them when they get a little bigger. I prefer Pampers Swaddlers or Huggies! Also, maybe bring them over a dinner. KFC something like that. Having a dinner was sooo helpful!

an outfit, gift cerificate to have pictures taken, savings bond, if she had a registery check to see if anything is left on it so you can see maybe what she still needs. I personally know from experience you can never have enough diapers size 1 or bigger though they out go the newborn pack before you know it. Also bath products you could make a cute gift basket for the new baby.

At some places you can get an outfit set but buy it a couple sizes too big as they will be getting a lot of newborn things and you'll find they'll have so much that the baby probably wear most of it so if you buy it big they'll have time to grow into it and the parents won't be buying as much then.

Open a college fund at the bank. A small amount like $25. will be enough. Give the parents a bankbook. Believe me, it's the best possible gift you could give. If the parents start saving now, they will be prepared by the time she is ready to go to college.

i had my baby 7 weeks ago...everyone bought me bath stuff for him, and made baby blankets that are seriously too big to use for everyday things. I would say buy the family receiving blankets. i would have loved to have more of those and they really come in handy to wrap the baby up or snuggle around baby in the car seat. they are really practical. sorry its not too original

A bouncer. It is a little seat, cushioned that you put the baby in when out or home (not for the car). As your baby moves it bounces lightly. It is great and soothes the baby. They are not too expensive either.
