Well, there's the fact that the character Mel plays is a plantation owner who has only paid workers on his land and no slaves... in those days? Come on, even the Anglican church owned slaves!

Thanks to Hollywood for not letting truth get in the way of people's patriotism. Otherwise they might actually learn something from history.
