dodge caravan 98 tranny starts fine when put in gear it jerks and wont go, what part could it be with out replacing the tranny or having to rebuild, it seems to be trying to go into gear

Does the vehicle have about 100K miles on it? If so, it needs a tranny rebuild. Dodge trannys pop the weasel at about 100-150K miles.

I would check the trans fluid level first. If it isn't the fluid level you can get the trans scanned to see what codes are present. This will give you the answer weather to rebuild or not.

no easy way out put another tranny in it.

Check your drive axels if they are not bad it will be in the transmission.
