Do you have a lot of items on your Desktop? if so... remove as many as you can... typically most of your items on your desktop are unused icons... and can be put into one folder like a MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER.. also your start button... you should only have..the windows update ,windows catalog, and program updates up at the top.
when you your start menu loaded down with programs and your desktop loaded down with icons... it causes the computer to slow... down majorly.. because it has to pull up all those files and get them ready for use just in case you need them.
if you computer is less than 2 years old.. ideally this is what u should do.
if it is older u might need more RAM but more than likely unless you are trying to run a lot of games off your computer you dont need more RAM...

You'll just have to kick in the money and get a new(er) one. You could also by the RAM and stuff and have it put in your computer, but you'll be better off just getting a new one.

You may have too many programs and files on your hard drive. Uninstall and delete programs you dont use, Remove hidden files that are just viruses, Clear files that you dont use.
Or you can upgrade.

Just upgrade your memory, tats all.
Get a 1GB DDRAM or better still a 2GB.
