I have 1997 GMC Sonoma. I cannot remove the ignition key. I can shut the engine off but it will not turn back enough to release the key.

we had a sunfire that did the same ting everybody said to replace the ignition switch but what i found was that the cable from the shifter was hanging up so i was able to grab the cable and pull on it and it seemed to straighten out and it has not happened done that again and its been over three months so i would try that before you replace the ignition switch

bout 250 dollars @ a dealer or 45-75 diy, go to auto zone Or local auto store and get a new ignition. it takes about an hour to install (if you poke around with it) also a haynes manual wouldnt hurt. if you have an air bag, which you probably do, you should let the pros handle it.
