Vacuum it first.....you'd be surprised how much dust and dead skin can accumulate...............then wipe it over with a damp cloth dipped in a weak solution of disinfectant and water. Allow to dry.

Unless it is badly stained, I simply vacuum it. Then put it out in the sunshine & turn it after 2 hours. The sun is a great sanitizer. Use a good mattress pad, too, & wash it once a month or oftener if you like.

I truly don't mean any offense, but I had to interject this.
DO NOT,,,under any circumstances, EVER allow a Kirby Sales person to do the demo on your mattress. I promise you'll bolt from the room, and run to the nearest bedding store for a new one.
What ends up on and in our mattress, usually from our own bodies, is the nastiest STUFF possible,,,especially over a long term.
So sayeth Steven Wolf

I know someone who vacuums the mattress and then sprays it with Lysol. Does this every month when she flips it to even out the use. Let the Lysol dry for at least an hour before flipping the mattress.

first dust/vaccum the mattress and then wipe it down with diluted metholated spirits. it has an odor but it disappears plus it gets rid of other odors like urine from a childs mattress.
