Bowel sounds that you are describing are also called borygami. It is caused by the rapid release of water or contents from one area to another. Bowel sounds in general re caused by the peristaltic action of the muscles in your GI tract. As normal flora (bacteria) produces gases the movement of the muscles cause the gas to push over rings in the intestine and create sound waves. Think about water and air sloshing around inside a water bed. To much sound is called hyperactive and can be an indication of diarrhea or other gi upset. hypoactive sounds can be due to surgery, infection, obstruction(either intestinal or blood flow) or medication.

ehwn the stomach not the intestines rumble is because the stomach is empty and the walls of it get together traping the air in the stomach making the rumble and this is a reflex of the stomach looking for something of food in it when the rumble is in the intestinsis due to the gases produced in the decomposingf proccess of the food in order to absorb the nutrients
