I use to stand wayyy back but this old hag cut in front of me once, so now I stand directly behind the person at the ATM.

A couple of feet, that's enough space I think for us both to be comfortable.

Far enough so that I won't accidentally be hurt or involved during their mugging. By the way, an old hag is great to have in front of you in case you need something to slow down a mugger. You simply grab them by their blue hair and maneuver them as a barrier between you and the mugger until they pass out. Then they make an excellent obstacle providing the crucial moment or two head start.

The same exact thing happened to me! I used to stand about 5-6 feet back and then two women just cut in front of me and when I told them I was in line they just gave me dirty looks. So when they were at the ATM I just stood really close behind them and breathed real hard.

So now I stand pretty close but I turn to the side so they know Im not watching them.

about 2 metres (about 6 ft) , its some distance adequate no longer to be impolite and see what the guy in the front is doing yet no too some distance to seem as if you're no longer in the queue. i have considered some ATM's which have a line on the floor saying the position to queue which i detect does no longer paintings very regularly as human beings might want to be impolite,

four to six feet
but even if its a teensy littel vestibule atm and im forced to stand closer
the focus is on looking over here or over there
distraction being the key
i wouldnt want anyone peering over my shoulder drooling over my account balance
but i dont mind the fella that hangs back
staring at the sky
or sorting through the little bits of paper in his pocket

I stand back pretty far to give them their privacy. If someone is standing too close to me I will ask them to back up.
