I have a friend who brags constantly. He's very smart and talented in most arenas and subjects in school. It gets really obnoxious, especially when I'm not doing so well in a class and he tells me, "Well I am!" I always do better than him in history class, but I never rub that in his face. What should I do to deal with him?

Tell him his constant self-absorption is getting tiresome and he needs to learn the meaning of humility. People are genuinely interesting when they are interested. If he doesn't respond maturely, walk away. Every time he brags after that, walk away. If he doesn't do it and actually makes an effort to be interested in something besides himself, encourage it.

Just laugh at him. When he brags say, "Yeah, right. Sure you are." And then laugh some more. He is an overbearing jerk. I suggest you find a new friend. Few people will put up with someone like him so why should you?

People who brag usually suffer from low self esteem. They need their ego fed and are trying to feel better and be liked. Oddly enough you might help your friend by piling on the complements-even to excess. If you want to help your friend try to help him feel better about himself. Let him know that he is OK just the way he is without all the advertising. Good luck.

Smile, and nod, and say things like "Damn, you're smart!"
Most of all, don't let it get to you. HE's the one with the problem.
