I have central air with a grate over the main vent. I use a standard foam filter. My filter got destroyed and currently do not have a replacement till tomorrow?
Is there an alternate I can use?
A towel, Fleece or something else temperarily till i can replace it?

The only thing that comes to my mind it's a panty hose, because it wont block the air from going through it, just make sure you ask your wife first, because she wont be able to use it again. In any case, your A/C system will be OK even if it doesn't have a filter for a few hours (you will be OK too unless you have severe allergies).

just for your info, never ever place anything other than a filter
at the return vent of a a/c system without getting into it, you can cause yourself more headaches than you could believe.
the system will be o.k. for a few days with out a filter, so you have a little bit of time.

It should be fine until tomorrow. Maybe turn off hte central fan, so it only blows while cooling, rather than being on 24/7.
