Hubs are stupid and require no software.

A USB hub simply plugs into any USB slot.

A network hub connects to a router, the router provides the "smarts".

Typically there's not much difference in $$ between a hub and a router. You're better off buying the router. It will do the same thing AND MORE than a hub does and most likely will provide a wireless service as well. If you want to share high speed internet, you're looking for a router. If you just want to plug several computers into a box (with wires), and you don't care so much about the internet, then I guess a router would do..... don't hear about them too much anymore though.

The hub is not commonly used anymore, but usually when you buy a router/hub it will come with the software to edit the settings in the product. You just put the cd in & it will guide you how to set it up.
