All I hear is about Troy Smith being the Heisman frontrunner. Have people not been paying attention to football? Troy Smith has too many players around him that make him good. Pittman, Gonzalez, Ginn. What about some other guys like Wolfe (who may very well break Barry Sanders' rushing record), Brady Quinn, Steve Slaton, etc. Im not making a point for any certain player just not Troy Smith. Tell me who your ONE front runner is other than Troy Smith cause Im tired of hearing about it and throw me some stats why you think your guy should win it. Ill read em all and then give 10 points to best answer.

My front runner would have to be Adrian Peterson. The game that could determine it will be the upcoming Oklahoma - Texas game. If he does well in that game then he has a good chance. Two years ago when he was a Freshman he rushed for 225 yards against Texas in a 12 to 0 win for the Sooners. Against a very good defense. He also rushed for a Freshman record of over 1900 yards and I believe he had 10 games of over 100 yards. The next year his production was slowed greatly due to injuries but he still managed 1200 yards. Also you need to remember that everyone now focuses on him and that Oklahoma basically does not have a good quarterback. The only thing that could really hurt him is the loss to Oregon. Only because the Heisman usually goes to a player on a team that is highly ranked ( usually number one or two). He is also averaging around 160 yards per game which would project out to be about 1920 yards over 12 games. Some players wont really be considered because of the teams they play on and their record and ranking. With this in mind, here is an interesting scenario which i think is highly possible that could happen. Suppose Ohio State goes undefeated until they play Michigan and then loses that game. At this point in time I believe they will both be undefeated going into that game. Oklahoma beats Texas and wins the rest of their games during the season. Notre Dame beats USC. Auburn loses a game along the way probably to LSU. This would leave Auburn with one loss, USC with one loss, Ohio State with one loss , and then Michigan undefeated . This would probably have the Heisman race up for grabs. Who to vote for, Quinn, Peterson, Smith, maybe Michigan quarterback Henne or running back Hart. Would be interesting to see.

While I do think Wolfe deserves some serious consideration, he is simply a monster (you can't drop that many yards on that many teams and not get labeled a monster....i.e. Last Week - 353yds, 3tds), he doesn't have enough national exposure, and that is a sad fact. Steve Slaton doesn't play in a deep enough conference to be seriously considered. If he wasn't putting up such big numbers, people would be concerned with him underachieving. And the Heisman is for the year's best player, not the player with the best career, so whatever Peterson has done in the past doesn't(or shouldn't, even though it does) amount to a hill of beans when it comes time to vote.

Now, as far as Smith not being a serious contender because he's surrounded by talent? C'mon, pick a valid argument. Look at the Heisman winner the last 2 years; are you telling me that Bush and Leinart weren't deserving because they didn't play on a crappy team? Or are you willing to say that Jordan didn't deserve all his MVP's because he was playing with a team full of All-stars? Seriously, just look at 2001 Ohio's "Mr. Football" Justin Zwick's numbers with the same group of talent-

... has a 5-4 record as a starter and has thrown for 1,592 yards and seven touchdowns ...

You can't blame the talent around him and still try and discredit Smith for working with the same group of guys. How many other QB's this season have beaten 3 ranked teams, all by at least 17 points. Smith is also playing on a team with 9 new starters on defense. if he falters at all, he doesn't have an experienced defense to fall back on.

Yes, I am from Ohio, and yes I am a Buckeye...but damn, give credit where credit is due.

You obviously haven't watched Troy Smith, because if you had you'd know that he deserves all the hype that he's gotten. Now I'm not saying that he's is going to or should win the Heisman, but I do think he's in the running. I've watched every OSU game this year, and without Smith's cannon arm, accurate passes, and threat to run, those other guys you spoke of don't get the kind of cushions and running room that they get. Now lets look at the stats: 1070 yds. passing, 65% completion percentage, 12 TDs, and only 2 picks. Thats over 200 yds and 2 touchdowns per game against teams like Texas, Iowa, and Penn State. If you want proof check out the touchdown pass from Smith to Robiskie vs. Penn State......simply amazing, and in the rain no less. So while there may be other worthy candidates, Troy Smith definitely belongs among them. P.S. Brady Quinn has a lot of weapons too, and he couldn't hold Smith's jock...get a clue man.

It's gotta be Steve Slaton, right?

I mean, his team's unbeaten (and has a very good shot at staying unbeaten). He's putting up huge numbers, and the defense knows he's going to get the ball. They still can't stop him.

Brady Quinn is above average (at best), Troy Smith is a product of the talent around him. Adrian Peterson is awesome, but his team isn't quite as good as it should be. Calvin Johnson is the most explosive player in the country, but WRs don't win the Heismann.

Give it to Slaton if the season were to end today.

prevailing the Heisman would not continually mean a great professional occupation. it rather is totally genuine for quarter backs. Manning finished 2nd interior the Heisman to Danny Wurfel. The defenses interior the pros are lots quicker, bigger and each physique interior the secondary is proficient. a consultant quarter back has to have a solid arm be waiting to work out over those great offensive and protective lineman. sure there are some exceptions to the rule(Vick,Pennington) yet Vick is rather cellular and Chad Pennington is rather precise. additionally,as suggested earlier right here he did not have an exceptionally solid combine paintings out. i'm not anti Troy Smith and that i think of he deserved the Heisman. yet i would be shocked if he is going any formerly than previous due 2nd around.

Brady Quinnn will start getting Heisman talk again. He already has 1402 passing yards and 13 TDs (better numbers than Smith). And now Notre Dame is heading into a six week stretch against Stanford, UCLA, Navy, North Carolina, Air Force, and Army; teams that Quinn should put up HUGE numbers against. Then a final week upset of USC could help solidify his chances.

I'm sick of hearing about him too. He had a bad game a few weeks ago and they talked about him like he did everything to win the game! I think he could throw five interceptions in a game and they would be like Troy Smith did a great job today. I'm sick of him!
