Its a tought question, and both have there pros and cons....make a list and see which has the most pros.....

I think if you have children you will be much happier in a newer home, in a (probably) safer neighborhood with better schools.

If you don't plan to have kids for a while, or are done with kids, than I think nothing would beat living in the city and being close to all the action....and frankly, even for all their faults older houses tend to be built better, with more architectural details, are usually always better (with modern amenities like nice windows and copper pipes : ) )

Depends upon where in Houston. In West U or Belaire, an older home in the city is fine. If you're talking Pasadena or LaPorte as a suburb, then no. I'll take Spring anyday. It all boils down to the 3 most important considerations in real estate: Location, Location, and Location.

I don't live in Houston, but if I did I would prefer to live in an older house. Older houses have more character and charm. Other peoples lives are a part of the house. I bought a older house last year. I moved to MO to help with my elderly mother. In this house I found pictures of the previous owners , I put it on my refrigerator, because they are a part of the history. Recently my neighbor told me of another lady who lived here and it made me feel good.
Another reason I like older houses is, I like vintage, garage sale and flea market findings and I like decorating the way I want to in my own way and in my own time. I call my place the "Vintage Corner Cottage". I have an apt. in NYC, I call it my "NYC Vintage Studio". I have never had any desire for a new home.

I would choose the most afforable option. If both houses are the same amount of money, I would choose the newer home simply because home repairs are a given, and at least the new home would be under warranty. An older home, although full of character, often has many hidden issues that will not immediately surface with the inspection.

That depends if you have kids or not. I have kids so i choose the suburbs for the schools. If i were single though or just without kids i would pick the old house for the character.
