I am caucasian female, 55, with an olive complexion. The problem is, I have this uneven tone about my skin, mostly on my arms, elbows, and a little on my neck. The sun seems to make it worse so I try to avoid the sun. Can you recommend any products that will truly, effectively, even out skin tone. I mean, not just a little, but a serious product that will truly help? I am a very clean person, so that is not the problem. Even with olive complexion skin my elbows look so dark and ugly. It's embarrassing. How can I lighten these areas that seem to be affected?

2nd question: Is it age that causes this?

Age definately does NOT cause this. Your condition is just hyperpigmentation or over production of melanin(pigment) in the skin which is our body's way of healing at a fast pace, especially if you get it worse when in the sun. First, always wear spf of 25 or 30, all over. Second, a bleaching agent for skin called hydroquinone is available at certain skin care clinics and online, but they may have different percentages of the hydroq. in it. Don't get one that has percent of 2 or 5, this will not help you much. A 10% hydroquinone will do the job, but it may be too aggressive for sensitive skin. Otherwise, I suggest buying the neutrogena microdermabrasion system if you wanted to go over the counter instead of professional help. This microdermabrasion system sloughs off dead skin cells at a deeper level than regular scrubs and the aluminum oxide crystals help lighten the skin pigment. Hope I helped, good luck!

You could try exfoliating with just a paste made from salt and water, which is a bit stronger than facial exfoliators or microdermabrasion kits. You may want to be a bit gentler on the skin on your neck, usinga facial exfoliator. After that, you could try a lotion that is designed to even out the skin tone; facial moisturizer is good. Apply a strong sunskreen whenever you go outside, even in the winter. If all else fails, try a full-coverage foundation (like one made for tattoos or scars) over the spots until it clears up. Good luck =)

Message: Peter, I'm so sorry about the name thing. I honestly did not look at your name, only the La Jolla CA part. I hope you will forgive me for that."

I forgive you - sort of. Why do you not like the name Peter?! It comes from greek for rock "Petros" and Peter is the saint in heaven that lets whoever in who is supposed to be in heaven. Let's chat.

The reason YA users can't message you is that you were sent a link to click on which would confirm your email address is legitimate, and you have yet to find that link and click on it to complete the process. I think?

I always recommend Bare Escentuals for facial products. They do not use talc at all, and is a very healthy product. For my arms and elbows, I use something that contains shea butter and cocoa butter. I don't know the name of the product that was used to lighten your elbows (It might have been Porcelana or something like that) but you could ask a pharmacist who would definitely know. I don't think age is causing this at all unless it is on your face. As we age, our faces and arms do tend to develop some small dark areas. Nothing to do but keep moisturizing your arms and hands. Best wishes.

it would be good to have a dermatologist check that out. A product I could recommend is marykay timewise visibly fit body lotion. It has a patented complex that helps reduce visible signs of aging, moisturizes for up to 10 hrs and improves skin elasticity and texture. I've seen pictures of someone who tested it on spider veins on her leg. used on one leg for about 8 weeks you wouldn't believe the difference, i was amazed. anyway if you want you can check out my website at www.marykay.ca/wnelitz hope this helps

I dont know if age causes this, but my mum uses Hazeline with cucumber extract. Hazeline is a brand known for its ability to whiten and even out skin tone. If you use this product, remember to apply it evenly and avoid too much sun!

Use a mild body exfoliant regularly to even-up your skin tone. Low concentrations of salicylic acid will do.

Age may causes it as well as the sun even though you stay out of it.

I have a white friend who also stays out of the sun but had spots. The derm. said it was from the sun she's exposed to while driving.

Try microdermabrasion treatments and Glytone clarifying gel.

Something like bare minerals--powder concealers. The best powder I have found is T. Clerc. Hard to find. French. superfine rice powder in a number of tones for all problem.

Age probably does have something to do with it. Try using Olay products (available at drugstores, Wal-Mart, etc.). I also like the skincare from Clinique (you can read about and purchase products online, or in department stores like Dillard's).
