How must the single white/black female go about business without intimidating the opposite "race", so as to be judged by character and accomplishments? What does the statement "Make them feel comfortable around you." actually entail for each situation?

Think of the department in terms of people instead of in terms of color. You are all people. Follow the golden rule.

I think this is a tough question. I am in this situation, I am a white female in a mostly black work force. For the most part, just work and do your job and you will have NO problem. But, there is always going to be that small group of women that no matter how much you aren't prejudice...they will find something about you that is wrong and just proves you are racist. Do your best to ignore them and just do your job. You are there to work and screw the socialization. I personally don't feel it is your job to MAKE them feel comfortable with you. That is your bosses job. They should be building the team and working to make it the best it can be. It is not your job to make them comfortable but your bosses job to make a good team that works well together and breaks the boundaries of what ever separates you...just do your job, do it as good as you can and treat others as you want to be treated...that is about all you can do.

As soon as you quit referring to your coworkers as "THEM" you're on the right track. How can you expect anyone to accept you, when you hold that person at such a distance? As soon as you acclimate to your environment and start to fit in, you should be able to excel based on your abilities.

If you want to be judged by your character and accomplishments, you have to judge other people the same way. Based on your question here, it's clear you are not doing that.

Depends on the office culture. I have seen both sides of it. If there are already racial cliques, you may be doomed. Just stick to work and try to be the best performer. If your office actually measures production, your stock will rise.

As long as you don't have a "holier than thou" attitude, you should do fine. Have a cheery disposition and notice those around you and recognise them as human beings, not white or black.

If you can do that in your mind and heart and show it, you would have no problem.

Give as you wish to receive. This sounds like a homework problem. It requires empathy, understanding, respect, consideration.

Change that mentality first, then do your best. If you're good you're good. If they are real nasty and picking on you, then quit. No one will be foolish enuff to stay if things work out this way.
