Because of the idea of natural law, which supersedes the laws of man. John Locke came up with the idea that all humans have the right to life, liberty, and property. Thomas Jefferson in his Declaration Independence took it a step further by saying life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. People are willing to die for life, liberty, and property, or happiness. The ideas Locke put together about a social contract that government must be run with the consent of the people has not disappeared. From 1689-1695 this man came up with ideals that a modern democracy is founded on. His ideas will live on.
