I think that would be the most awesome job to have... walking around outside all day without having to do heavy manual labor. I want to research it before I apply, how would I go about this?

I hate to tell you that in less that 10 years these jobs won't exsist. They have these meters that send readings via radio to a computer that calculates how much customers owe. Let me suggest looking at being a letter carrier. Another friend of mine lives in a cool city and she started giving walking tours for groups for cash.

Call one of the utility companies personnel department and tell them you are considering this sort of work and ask if it would be possible to accompany one of their meter readers for a day. .. I am sure that they will let you do it. ... One bit of advice, I don't know how long this sort of position will exist because in some places they have electronic meter readers installed on the meters that reads the meter each month and than makes a phone call to a computer with the reading ..eventually the utility companies may choose to go all electronic and then you will be out of a job..

You need a license, insurance, a good driving record, be responsible, somewhat intelligence (read, write, some math), and personable (because people will ask you go get the F' off their lawn).

And, it's a crappy paying job.

Talk to one of them. People love it when you are interested in their work.
