!) Is it shorter to take EdD (Doctor of Education) than PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in the States?
My classmate's dad just spent 2 years to get the degree. But one of my friends in TC(Teacher's College) told me that some EdD programs takes 6 years or longer. I am wondering whether it is generally short to get EdD or it depends on which school you choose.
2) Then how to choose an EdD program with high quality and less years? Can EdD teach in the universities or colleges?

A Doctoral program can vary in length. There are no set lengths. I was a biochemistry professor for 30+ years and mentored 27 Ph.D students. One took only 3 years to get his Ph.D (and now is a professor at an Ivy League Institution) and a couple took almost 7 years.

The idea of a doctoral degree is to get practical experience in your field and add to the field's body of knowledge. There is no way of knowing beforehand how long it will take you to accomplish that.

With respect to your friend's dad...you sound like you are in University, so your friend is probably a similar age to you, and therefore their father would probably be in his mid 40s (or older). I would hazard a guess that your friend's father did his Ed.D in an area that he had a great deal of background knowledge and this helped accelerate his degree and cut down considerably the time required.

I believe it would depend on the program, and also how much time you can devote to it. Many people who enroll in an Ed.D. program are currently teachers or administrators who choose to use summers and evenings to complete the program, and thus it takes longer. Most programs have time limits, that you must complete it in a certain number of years.

With an Ed.D. you can teach at universities or colleges, you would be teaching some sort of education classes depending on your specialty. Specialties could be anywhere from a specific subject, such as Social Studies Ed to Ed Administration to Curriculum, etc.
