In the northern hemisphere...
Winds blow counterclockwise around low pressure centers.
Winds blow clockwise around high pressure centers.

In the southern hemisphere...
Winds blow clockwise around low pressure centers.
Winds blow counterclockwise around high pressure centers.

Both wind directions are counter-clockwise around the center, but the low pressure center draw the wind into it (so it backs) and the high pressure center pushes it out (veers).

The way I understand it.. High pressure.. Low pressure..well what the wind is.... is air rushing from the high pressure to fill the void of the low pressure. Like here on the W. coast.. When it's hot inland.. like 100 degrees or above.. Well all that heat the air is rising. causing a void.. so here on the coast there is a strong westerly wind.. rushing inland to fill the void caused by the heat.
