What causes feedback on a microphone and what can I do to combat this?

Every time I turn the mic up, it screeches horrifically. What can I do?

Make sure that the microphone is not in front of the speakers, point the speakers in another direction. If you have an EQ, make sure that you are not pushing the levels too much. Keep them below the center line on the EQ.

It's when the mic is too close to the speaker

Keep them out of line with the loudspeaker(s). Getting a directional or noise cancelling mike can also help.
