A flat character is a walk-on or bit part. You never know much about them because they are flat. There's usually just one defining characteristic. Think of the nurses in the O. R. on MASH. Unless they were a guest star in that episode, you never knew anything about them except that they were nurses. They might had a line or two, but that's it.

allusion-Definition: An allusion is a reference to a famous person, place, thing or part of another work of literature. It is assumed that the reader understands the allusion.
Examples: The very title of "Catcher in the Rye" is an allusion to a Robert Burns poem and all its associated meaning.
flat character-Definition: Flat characters are minor characters in a work of fiction who do not tend to undergo substantial emotional change or growth. Flat characters are also referred to as "two-dimensional characters," and are the opposite of round characters
Examples: Mr. Collins in "Pride and Prejudice" is a flat character, mostly used to comic effect and to help advance the plot.
round character complication-Round characters are complex figures. A round character is a full, complex, multidimensional character whose personality reveals some of the richness and contradictoriness we are accustomed to observing in actual people, rather than the transparent obviousness of a flat character. We may see a significant change take place in a round character during the story.
