I live in N.West, Texas and don't mind driving if it'll save money.
It doesn't have to be a big and fency place.

Try the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. We have lots of ski resorts, great ski conditions, and excellent roads to get there. Since they're mostly appreciated by Midwesterners, it's not the huge tourist destination like Colorado or Vermont, and the prices are very reasonable!! Well worth a day & a half drive.

Breckenridge, Co or Keystone Co. Three mountains very close together and you can ski them all on the same pass. Stay in Frisco if you can its pretty cheap for a nice time share. Copper Mt is also close.

Most likely you will need to drive. Depends on where you are trying to stay on how much a per night hotel will cost. $1,000 dollars doesn't go to far so this will determine your length of stay.

Good Luck.
