I'm not sure... but I have heard the same thing. It has to be organic raspberry tea... not just flavored raspberry tea. Somehow its supposed to contract your uterus... ??

Why the tea works? Red Leaf Raspberry Tea is an astringent, which is a medicine that checks or slows down discharges of blood, mucus, and other secretions of the body.
Astringents work by "contracting the tissues and canals of the body. Physicians use two classes of astringents, vegetable (organic) and mineral (metals). The vegetable astringents, like red leaf raspberry tea, contain tannic and gallic acids and other substances. The mineral astringents include mineral acids, such as nitric and hydrochloric acids, zinc, iron, lead, silver, and alum. The ailments treated for by use of astringents include diarrhea, sore throat, hemorrhage (child birth), and various mucuous discharges."
"One of the reasons that Red Raspberry leaves are so efficacious is that they contain iron citrate upon which depend the remarkable blood making and regulating properties in the body. It also promotes the astringing and contracting action of the female organs and other internal tissues and organs.

It's not the raspberry, it's just the tea. Tea is a diuretic, it dehydrates you, knocking you into labor. Not the healthiest or most efficient way of doing things, but it's better than castor oil!

If you really want to go into labor without causing any additional undue pain or discomfort, try rolling your nipples. It will typically only work if you and baby are ready for labor, so it's generally reliable and non-invasive. Take your nipple in between your thumb and index finger and firmly but gently roll it back and forth for a minute or two, or until you feel your uterus contract at it's peak. Then let go for 5-10 minutes or so, and go to the other nipple. It may sound strange, but it really works! It releases the hormone Oxytocin into your bloodstream, which is the natural form of Pitocin that doctors use to induce labor. My midwife told me about it and within hours of sending me home to start, I was in the hospital with steady contractions 3-5 minutes apart!
