Got a Minarelli P4 50cc engine with a dellorto UA-19S carb. I need some help with carb adjustments. How/when do I adjust the long needle in the throttle slide? It has 5 notches in it for adjusting up or down. The bike runs ok but is hard to start when cold and bogs down when trying to accelerate up a hill.

The needle adjustment will not help with those symptoms. The needle position changes when the carb move from main to pilot jet supply. Check air filter and choke. You may have a clogged pilot jet, pull the float bowl and remove and clean jets.

Do you have the owners manual for the bike? What does the troubleshooting section say?

If it performs the way you describe, you may have more than a carburetor problem.

If you don't have the owners manual or shop manual, set the throttle in the middle setting and see how it runs with the engine hot and then cold. Does it change or stay the same? If it runs the same with the engine hot or cold then it could be the carburetor, but if it changes then it's something else.

When my bike ran badly uphill it was because one of the spark plugs wasn't sparking, not because of the carburetor.

Your bike SHOULD start on the first try almost all the time unless it's really cold out or there's something wrong. I recommend taking it to a shop and seeing what the mechanic tells you.

It's nice to be able to work on your bike yourself, but it really SUCKS to screw up your bike because you think you can work on it yourself if you really can't.

Adjusting the needle wont help starting problem. there should be a mixure screw on side of carb and also a throttle stop screw which adjusts idle speed. I think you should take a look at exhaust pipe and silencer which may be partly blocked with carbon which is normal/common on mopeds

the needle has 5 notches putting it in the middle or 3rd notch is the default set. in the 1st notch less gas comes out. with your problem when your accelerating it shortens your supply of air and too much gas so the engine is having a difficult time burning ithe gas and thats also the reason why its hard to stsrt the engine, too much gas, check also the spark plugs if its wet and burnt black thats too much gas supply ,if its dry and rusty brown thats the tune

Put the clip on the groove that is second from the top.

Screw you mixture screw in all the way, then back it out 2 1/2 turns.
