A CD uses red laser light, a DVD uses Blue Laser Light.
Because the frequency of blue light is so much higher, it can decode smaller "pits," which is the way individual bits are encoded on any laser disc.
Newer Technoplogies, like HDDVD and Blur Ray will have as much as 50 Gabytes on one disc. But the Next generation after that, the Holographic video disk, will hold 200 megs or more.

It's just scientific progress. CDs were out in the 80s. DVDs came out later. The people with thick glasses, white lab coats and possibly more Education Degrees than dates they ever had came up with a way to cram more data bits onto a disc. (Then they added a layer or two to the disc.) A 74min CD holds 650,000,000 bytes of info. A standard, low end, DVD-R holds 4,700,000,000 bytes of data (without layers). In a nutshell, there's TONS more room for info on a DVD.

They use a dramatically different technology, involving thinner scan lines (red vs. blue lasers) and multiple layers of encoding. A DVD holds about seven times as much data as a CD. New discs are in development that will hold even more.

CD's carry seven hundred MB well worth of documents and dvd 4.7 MB others greater. Now there is a thank you to get 10 - 12 hours well worth of music on one CD, yet i'm no longer able to discover the academic on a thank you to do it!

to be simple cds hold up to 750 mega bites and dvds hold 4500 megabites
