Dell Latitude gets constant high marks from CNet pretty much any model. If you want a Pentium 4 better look at used systems it's all pretty much dual core now Pentium dumped the numbering system so i guess you could call the dual core a Pentium 5. I'd also get 1GB of sdram at least for Windows Vista or 2GB for Windows Aero.

Trouble is a Latitude is sold only to business customers but if you get the right sales rep in small business on the phone they'll sell one just because they get better commissions off the Latitude than the Inspiron. If you want real power get a Precision which is an XPS with the trimetal body of a Latitude and same protected hard drive.

If you're not a business then get the Dell Inspiron e1705 unless you want to buy a system that will make people envy your very existence then get a Dell XPS M1710 starting at $3700.

Some people will say Dell is junk and praise Alienware. Hope they know Dell owns Alienware.

Toshiba is a decent system. Lenovo is pretty good the Chinese company has been branded by IBM to the point where i think IBM just gave up makng notebooks. My dad swears by HP but i just can't get impressed at all with them way overpriced. Anything is better than Gateway though.

I mean come on Gateway you cannot be forgiven for e-machines.......ever.

It'd be better if you placed a budget up as well. But offhand, I'd say stay away from Sony and Compaq. HP as a last resort, and either Dell or Toshiba. Both seem to make pretty decent laptops, though Dell seems to give you more bang for your buck as far as processors go. Most of the entry levels for Toshiba use the Celeron while Dell has quite a few using the Core Duo and Solo.

depends where u live ...but if i were u and if your a gamer i perfer buying one from alienware...even though they look expense they have 5x better stuff than toshiba, sony, dell, etc... i seen it ...but since your looking for that stuff probably for the cheapest one it would be a dell... if you want a good one go with HP or Sony... toshiba is getting worse these days dunno why but they are if you want a trust worthy company its gonna be HP they're laptops are good at hand and always come for a worth it price.
