I have trichotillomania and I control myself quite good. Now, I am afraid my children will also have trichotillomania.

I noticed today my son's eyelashes are thiner... should I talk to him about it? He's 7 years old.

Sure, talk to him, but keep it short, and use simple terms. Keep your voice calm and level and resolve beforehand not to freak him out. Clearly, you want to ask him if he's been pulling his eyelashes out, so use a non-confrontational tone of voice when you do. Make it clear to him that he's not in trouble and that he's not going to be punished, because you want to help him.

Since onset generally occurs at puberty, please discuss this alone with his pediatrician, or your doctor first to see what the best approach to the problem is. I do mean alone, as you do not want to induce unneccessary stress in his life at this point. You might want to consider to use a routine visit to the eye doctor to confirm your suspicions first. Speak to the eye doctor, in private, before the exam, or notify the office. Have the exam performed and have the doctor notify you later in private as to his findings.

Evidence is now starting to accumulate pointing to TTM as being genetic in origin (cf. Entrezgene (12-Aug-2006). Gene (UTF-8). NCBI.) Stimulant abuse has also been known to cause, or at least trigger episodes of, trichotillomania.

It sounds like your anxiety disorder is something you want to share. It's highly unusual that a seven year old would have this disorder so you might be projecting your anxiety onto him.
