I don't know but it doesn't stop in high school. It may be worse there though because of all the little cliques. Sometimes I think it's just a lack of self esteem. Some people just can't feel good about themselves unless they tear others down.

They see each other as competition! The ones that r all hateful and bitchey r totally insecure about themselves. It makes them feel better about themselves to put others down. I know I was a cheerleader in highschool and quit my Junior year cuz they tried to tell me who I could date and who I could be friends with! BULL CRAP! I think its really sad and a totally waste of time to purposely try to hurt another person! But its all in jealousy-worry-and insecurities of their own self that causes it all

Because girls are always in competition with each other: how they look, they want to be noticed, the clothes, stuff like that. Who do you check out first? The other girl. Girls are always checking themselves out. And they always dis each other too. Finding something wrong to make their own selves look better.It will never end.

competitiveness for boys could be one reason, but just like you, I never really understood why women are so mean to each other, even when being adults. men are simpler. that's why I always had more male friends.
