My daughter rented hotel rooms on her own when she was 17, with no problems. This was in 2000, and on the east coast.

Generally speaking, you should be able to rent one at 18, including with a person or group the same age. You will probably be required to pay with a credit card (it can be very difficult to rent a hotel or motel room with cash alone ... esp a group of young people). Keep in mind that any private establishment reserves the right to refuse service to anyone, and some managers may choose to do so. It suks, but its life.

Here are some tips:
Act mature, responsible, and professional when you go in to register for a room. Dress modestly and the way you would to go to a better family restaurant. Have a credit card to pay for the room. Have one person go in to register, preferably the oldest and most well-spoken.

And remember ... be safe, and it's best if your parents know where you are and what you are doing.

You must be 18 to have the room in your name (I know this because I was always the oldest of my group and the room was always in my name) but no, you don't have to have the parent, just someone 18 or older.

Once you are 18 you are considered an adult. You can do anything you want except drink.
