2 things I'll recommend. In the spring put down a fertilizer which contains a crabgrass pre-emergent. One example is Scott's Turfbuilder Plus Halts, but you can buy something comparable for alot less money. Secondly, buy some crabgrass killer
( liquid ) and a pump up sprayer. Mix it as directed and have it on hand to spray the bad areas that may come in. Don't let any chemicals freeze over the winter. email me with any more questions. Also tell me what area you live in. I assumed you were up north. You may have another problem which is actually a weed and not a grass. I can explain that to you as well.

Not sure which kind of burrs you are talking about. If you are talking about sand burrs then your normal weed killer will not work. I just bought some weed killer at Walmart specifically made for sand burs and other hard to kill grass weeds. Thus you might have to do some research and get the weed killer that works. If it is black berry then I have found that a persistant use of brush killer works. If it is other burrs then find out what they are and I am sure there is a way to eradicate it. The burrs are seeds so you may be killing the parent but the seeds are still on the ground. You have to kill the plant every year and not let it go to seed. I suspect that is why you are not winning this long battle. Digging them up will not help – the seeds will still be there.

Meanwhile, I've read that you should use a bag when mowing. Grass burrs are an annual. They depend on the sticker burrs as seeds. If you pick them up when you mow, they can't come back next year.

Keep digging and pulling and killing. Before digging, gently pull up all the seed head runners to isolate the mother plant. It is their defense mechanism to let side shoots break off easily, leaving enough of the weed to start another plant and continue the species. The female plant is very easy to pull roots and all. Male plants are more difficult. You'll know if you're pulling girl or boy by the way they come out of the dirt. I like the cat food answer, never thought of that. Been battleing the goat head, nasty bite you stickies too.

Dig them up before they go to seed. Then put cat food near the ones that do grow. All the neighbors cats, dogs, raccoons, possums... will come after the food and carry the burrs back to their own homes.
Refrain all urge to shoot the cats. They're there to help get rid of the burrs.
