You couldn't use your social security # which is virtually required for everything. What type of living could you make without showing ID or S.S.#. To get a car or drivers license, ID & SS# is required. Any records you have of prior education, etc. would be useless or unable to use. If you leave the country, what country could you stay for unlimited time with no ID and one you could make a decent wage? What trade could be done in anothr country without showing some ID? With computer systems able to track your almost every move across the country when using your true ID, & SS#, your options are truely limited. Any suggestions would help.

Previously, you could only get an "under the table job" like a nanny or a gardener.

Nowadays, maybe you can contact an illegal alien of your acquaintance and find out where to get a realistic green card. You could then disappear into that subculture. As a member you could deal with SS, driver's license, and ID as they do. You won't have a credit card so everything will be paid just in cash but cash is not very traceable.

It is a whole new take on the hidden identity problem. I bet some clever author is working on a book with that premise right now.

First of all, social security numbers aren't unique! (yup, true fact, in fact there were 1944 people in NYC that had the same number, SSI got so confused they reissued them all new numbers). That's why you have to give all of your names and not just your number to SSI.

Anyways, the easiest way to disappear and re-appear is to find someone who died around your age who didn't leave any dependents, and then become that person. It's not too hard to do - and if you move to another part of the country, it's even easier. Death certificates aren't shared around the country, they rarely make it outside of the state of origin, so you can set up residence, file a "change of address" with the post office, file for a "lost social security card" with SSI and they'll send you a new one, and you're off and running.
