i own a repair shop,,and your not supposed to drive with the rear window down on it,,you will smell some exhaust fumes because the vehicle pulls the fumes back in when your driving it,any of them will do this,it tells you in the owners manual not to operate the vehicle with the window down on it,,it can be dangerous,,good luck i hope this help,s.

This used to be a problem a long time ago on Jeeps which had a soft top (50s & 60s).
With the rear canvas rolled, you would feel sick in no time with the exhaust fumes getting sucked into the vehicle from the rear.
The simplest solution was to open the front windshield enough to counter the vaccum buildup in the rear.
But what if one does not want the wind blowing in your face the whole time?
Simple, fit vertically long rearview mirrors on both sides of the front door and position them in such a way that they direct the air into the vehicle.
Maybe this might help if you plant to drive often with your rear window open

I've had the same thing on my 87. The rear section of my tailpipe came loose and I just fastened it up until I got around to fixing it correctly. I soon found out that I couldn't ride with the rear window open, the exhaust was choking. Once I replaced the pipe it's no longer a real problem. I have noticed that in slow traffic some fumes still come in but that also happens with our Explorer if we have the glass open. Best to keep that back glass closed unless you have the roof off. Certainly you'll want to make sure your exhaust system is in good shape though.

When the air comes over the top of the vehicle, like yours, with a flat back window, the air swirls down then back up along the window. If the window is open, then the air, (exhaust) comes into the vehicle.

the exhust smell you are getting is normal with the rear window open see when you are moving air is flowing across the top,under the bottom of bronco and down each side and that causes a vaccum at the rear which sucks the fumes in the open rear window you can try finding a air deflector that mounts on the top at the rear to redirect some of the air flowing across top of the vehicle this will also help keep your rear widow cleaner with it closed but i can`t remember where i who sell then

if you smell it there might be an exhaust leak getting into the car from underneath. Do not drive with window open or very far until it is fixed! Carbon monoxide will make your lips and mouth very red just before you pass out! Very dangerous!
